Bullseye Design Worx was approached by FN America to develop the styling and exterior CAD surfaces for the midsize variant of the full size 509 pistol that FN had recently released. This version of the 509 would be a serious contender for the very popular Glock model 19.
The project began with several rounds of concept sketches that explored a range of designs that varied from a near clone of the full-size model to those that were decidedly different. As each round was developed some concepts were dropped and others refined with input from FN. The final concept chosen to go into production with was one that mimicked the full-size pistol. While not the most forward-looking design, it was the obvious choice considering FN’s heritage and roll as the lone supplier to the US military of the M16. FN also supplies many other rifle and pistol platforms to the military and Law Enforcement. Considering this and the growing success of the full-size version, it was no surprise that FN wished to keep the midsize version conservative and in step with the current full size design. The midsize did benefit through from some user feedback from the full size that resulted in improved ergonomics.
With the concept direction selected the project jumped over to surface modeling in PTC’s Creo software. To get the ergonomics, grip details and transitions all well resolved required some very intense surface modeling. Slight curvatures and different molding directions required two unique solutions for creating the same type of texture on different parts. The transition from the trigger guard to the picatinny rail also required exploration of a several solutions to find the one that produced the best results. Because the midsize had a more time for development, we were able to spend more time on refining the details to take the refinement a notch.
With 1 million rounds of testing, the 509 Midsize is built to be a full-service ready pistol. FN takes its responsibility seriously in producing reliable firearms for the military or LE because lives depend on it. Does the 509 Midsize compete with the Glock 19? Depends who you ask. Both are designed, built and extensive testing for use in combat. It will mostly be up to each individual’s shooting style, brand loyalty and ergonomic preference. Ultimately, each should be considered when looking for a pistol of this configuration.
